Boom in new businesses
Figures from the ONS show more new businesses opened in 2014 than at any point since 2000. It estimates that 351,000 businesses started up last year, an increase of 1% on the year before. FSB chairman John Allan said that business start-ups had reached "unprecedented levels as more people see self-employment and starting out in business as a rewarding career choice". In total, the ONS calculates there were about 2.55m active businesses in the UK in 2014, up by 102,000 on the previous year report Harris & Co chartered accountants Northampton, the specialist small business accountants.
